Online speedometer or app: choose by the job you need done

For a quick visible speed check, a browser tool may be enough. For recording with the screen locked, exporting a route or using a vehicle display, compare specific app capabilities. Installing software does not by itself guarantee better GPS accuracy or a complete journey log.

Choose the outcome before comparing features

Write a one-sentence requirement: see current speed as a passenger, keep a training route, or record a whole trip while navigation is open. These are different products to evaluate. A large dial is sufficient evidence only of a display, not of route export, background operation or cloud backup. Start with the simplest workflow that meets the requirement, then verify it on your own device. Do not grant broad permissions just because a feature list is long.

For a spot check, assess the browser session itself

zigmaty can show live speed and session statistics without an app-store installation. Load the tool, allow location when starting, select units and keep it visible for the check. A working browser is still using device storage and resources; ‘no download from a store’ does not mean zero storage or battery use. A home-screen shortcut makes reopening convenient, but does not automatically add native background tracking or integration with CarPlay and Android Auto.

For recording, test interruptions before trusting a full journey

An installed app may offer background recording, but verify the exact app, operating-system permissions and any required setting. Test a short harmless session, lock the screen, switch to navigation, return and inspect whether the record contains gaps. Do not assume every app passes this test. For the browser tool, use a visible session as the baseline; a preserved summary after an interruption is not proof of complete recording. Keep accuracy and recording continuity as separate evaluation criteria.

Offline means more than losing mobile coverage

Distinguish an already open session losing connectivity from closing the product and reopening it without a connection. Maps may also require a separate download even when location measurement remains available. Before an important outing, test the exact reopening scenario while still somewhere safe and connected if you need recovery. Do not accept ‘works offline’ as an answer to every one of those questions. This browser tool does not promise that every device can relaunch it offline.

Inspect what you can export, retain and delete

zigmaty keeps recent summaries locally; it is not a cloud-synced account or a GPX route recorder. If you need a track, inspect a sample export from the app you are considering: route points, timestamps and summaries are different data. Check deletion, account requirements and any paid feature restrictions directly in that product. Local processing of speed is also not a claim that the website makes no network requests. Read the privacy information for the whole service, not just the measuring function.

Make the choice with a small acceptance test

Try a normal visible check first, then test only the additional requirements you actually have: screen lock, navigation alongside recording, offline reopening or a usable export. Keep the same unit and comparable reception when assessing readings. A smoother number may simply be more filtered, not more accurate. Choose the product that demonstrably supports your workflow and permissions you are comfortable granting. This guide is a decision method, not an unverified ranking of apps or a claim that browsers always beat native software.

Practical interpretation guide
Condition or factorWhat it means
Occasional visible speed checkA browser session may meet the need; test location access first.
Screen-off route recordingVerify a specific recorder and its permissions with a short test.
Offline relaunchTest a closed-to-open launch, not only a connection drop.
GPX, cloud backup or vehicle integrationVerify the exact product feature; zigmaty does not supply these by installing a shortcut.

Questions before choosing a speedometer

Is a paid app necessarily more accurate?

Price and installation are not accuracy tests. Compare identified devices, current readings and the task; use a suitable independent reference for error claims.

Does an app always keep recording in the background?

No. Check its documented feature, permissions and actual behaviour on your device instead of generalising from another app.

Does the browser tool store nothing?

No. Settings and recent summaries use local storage, and the site loads web resources. Review privacy and deletion separately from the absence of an app-store install.

Will installing the website add vehicle-screen support?

No. A shortcut is not CarPlay or Android Auto integration. Verify compatibility in a product that explicitly offers the integration.

Can I switch browsers and keep the same history?

Not automatically. Local history may belong to a different storage context. Keep a deliberate copy of summaries you need before changing or clearing that context.
