km/h to mph converter: kilometres per hour to miles per hour
Enter a known speed in kilometres per hour to express the same speed in miles per hour. The calculator divides by 1.609344 and rounds only the displayed result to at most six decimal places. It does not measure your movement or request location.
Enter the number, not the unit
Type a non-negative number such as 80 or 80.5. A decimal point or comma is accepted, but grouping separators and text such as “80 km/h” are not. Clearing the field leaves a dash instead of inventing a zero. Enter 0 explicitly if the original speed is zero. The displayed example is a calculation, not a reading from your device.
Divide by the length of a mile
One international mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres. Because the time unit remains one hour, mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344. For 100 km/h, this gives approximately 62.137119 mph, normally shortened to 62.14 mph in a casual comparison. Dividing by 1.6 is only a shortcut; the calculator retains the full defined factor.
Check whether the answer should be smaller
A mile is longer than a kilometre, so a positive speed expressed in mph has a smaller number. For example, 50 km/h is approximately 31.07 mph, not 80.47 mph. The latter comes from applying the opposite operation. Keep both units in your notes so that a copied number cannot be mistaken for the input.
Choose useful rounding for the original measurement
Six available decimals are not six decimals of measurement accuracy. If a speed was read from a coarse dial, use an appropriately rounded result. Retain the unrounded calculation when doing further arithmetic, then round at the end. For very small positive inputs, display rounding may show zero; check the scale of the original value before interpreting that as no motion.
Do not convert distance as though it were speed
Kilometres and miles are distances; km/h and mph are speeds. Although their numerical length factor matches, the labels describe different quantities. If you know only total distance and duration, calculate an average first. Converting a dashboard reading also does not correct wheel calibration, GPS delay or the legal rules for the road.
